Governing Board Meeting: Length and Evaluation

Thu, 08/31/2017 - 09:34 -- johnshutze

Out of curiosity, how long do your Governing Board meetings last (one day, few hours, etc.)?

Also, in what ways do you evaluate the Governing Board meeting (if at all)?

As always, thanks for sharing your exeprience!

John,

Are you looking for examples where the governing board is also the board of city/county officials, a separate appointed board, or does it make a difference?

Hi John,

We have 2 governing boards for our 2 counties. 1 board meets quarterly for 1.5 hours and the other meets bi-monthly for 1 hour. Every year we have a board retreat that is 4 hours long and is used as an annual review of the health department's highlights and evaluation of the board meetings. This past year we sent a survey monkey to the board members to ask about their satisfaction with the meeting agenda, interaction with the health department staff, and changes they would like to see. We will use the responses to improve the meetings and retreat for the upcoming year. I hope this helps!
