I'm looking for an engaging free or low-cost online introduction to QI to use with new outreach staff and case managers as part of their initial orientation. The ones that I have reviewed so far (i.e., Operationalizing Quality Improvement in Public Health – University of Minnesota, CQI for Public Health: The Fundamentals - OSU College of Public Health, QI 102 – How to Improve with The Model for Improvement – Institute for Health Improvement) are great resources but are not exactly compelling viewing. I have been looking on YouTube, and while IHI has a good video, "Dr. Mike Evans Video: An Illustrated Look at Quality Improvement in Health Care," it is really not targeted for this audience.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am really looking for a basic introduction to the basic concepts of quality improvement with an introduction to the PDSA cycle.
Thanks,
Patricia McGrane
Hi Patricia,
Hi Patricia,
We created a QI 101: Basics presentation that we have rolled out to our staff. Here is the prezi link. I have the slides with presenter notes and a PDSA worksheet if you would like to present this to your team. Please email me.
Also, check out these other community forum threads similar to your QI training question that may help:

Our department used the Mr.
Our department used the Mr. Potato Head training module offered by True Simple. This was an entertaining, practical lesson that includes a PDSA form (to start the conversation of documentation), and what questions to ask at each phase of the process. I would highly recommend using this lesson if you have staff that are not interested in CQI or believe engagement will take significant time and effort.

Hi Patricia,
Hi Patricia,
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Michigan Public Health Institute developed a online, self-paced training in performance management and quality improvement that is available at no cost to users. Embracing Quality in Public Health: A Practitioner's Performance Management Primer is available on the MPHI website and it takes about an hour to complete. Participants receive a certificate upon completion of the training that may serve as evidence for staff training in performance management and quality improvement (PHAB Domain 9). The training provides an orientation to the Turning Point performance management model and the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. Over 1500 people have accessed the primer globally and some health departments have made it a mandatory training for all staff.

There are a lot of great
There are a lot of great examples shared in response to this comment. Two areas that sometimes get short shrift in intro's to QI and the PDSA cycle are the importance of 1) building a team, both who is included and the mutual respect and trust for comments from all members - from frontline to customers to management and 2) not jumping to fast through "plan" step by only brainstorming ideas - instead of using some other tools like the 5 why's, fishbone, others - that help identify whether the change considered will address a root cause of a problem - or will just be a superficial tweak.
I know that the Houston health department developed an interactive FUN approach through an online intro to QI which they've shared with other Texas health departments - maybe they'd share more widely.
Hi Patricia,
Hi Patricia,
I recommend the online 'quick learns' on www.NYLearnsPH.com:
Each of these trainings are designed to take 30-60 minutes to complete. They're focused, engaging and interactive, and all of them are free.

This list of online trainings
This list of online trainings looks great Isaac. I clicked around late last week and observed that the online trainings are made available via the NY Department of Health learning management system. I have yet to sign up and try a course though. Am I correct in assuming that PHQIX members must create a free account on the NY DOH LMS site to access the free training?
Thanks,
Ty
Hello Ty,
Hello Ty,
You are correct. It's free to create an account and enroll in courses on www.NYLearnsPH.com. The registration and enrollment steps are straight forward, but instructions are attached to this post in case they might be helpful:
