Performance Management

Wed, 09/09/2015 - 10:21 -- brandi_wamhoff

Hello!  Our Health Department is getting ready to review and revise the Performance Measures within each section/division including Disease Prevention, Community Health, Environmental Health, etc.  I think one of the more difficult parts of this task, is helping each participant to generate ideas as to what kind of measures would be beneficial to them in their scope of work.  I was wondering, would anyone be willing to share a list of some of their organization's performance measures?  I think seeing what others are doing would really be great for our staff and would help all of us to better understand the kinds of things we should be looking for.  Thanks in advance!

We are as well.  Our BOH was asking that we look into some form of benchmarking.  I think it would be great to start a repository of measures involving various size health departments.  I have a document from NACCHO that includes 7 health departments:  1). Baltimore City Health Department; 2). Chicago Department of Public Health; 3). Denver Health and Hospital Authority; 4). Los Angeles County Health Department; 5). Multnomah County Health Department; and 6). Santa Clara County Public Health Department.  Would anyone be interested in working together to start a repository?  I am going to talk to someone at the Public Health Foundation this Friday as well as to Reena at NACCHO to see if we can get any national assistance for this effort.  Just let me know if you are interested.

I run our communicable Disease program in our county and currently we have 2 performance management goals for 2016: 1. 100% off all category I disease and disease outbreaks will have investigations initiated within 15 minutes from report. 2.100% of all communicable disease drill calls will be transfered to the correct staff member within 15 minutes. (we run a drill in the summer with fake disease outbreaks and category I disease -active TB, Meningitis, etc- to monitor if the call goes to a person and not a voicemail and to the correct staff member to initiate disease investigation)

In CT we have many program performance measures that are aligned with our State Health Improvement Plan. You can view them at www.ct.gov/dph/dashboard.  It is best viewed in chrome or firefox.   There is a table of contents on the home page. Just click on any of the blue links marked dashboard.  You will see our Indicators (marked I) followed by performance measures (marked PM).  Should you have any questions let me know at joan.ascheim@ct.gov

Best, Joan

We have gone through a PDCA cycle to prepare for the launch of our new Performance Management Process.  Please send me your email address, and I will share the documents with you that also include the measures.

We launched our Performance Management System at Cecil County Health Department last year and would be happy to share the performance measures we came up with. We are also interested in the idea of creating a repository of  performance measures. Feel free to contact me.

NACCHO has compiled a number of performance management related deliverables resulting from the Accreditation Support Initiative (ASI). This link includes example of performance dashboards, performance measures, performance management plans, etc. from local health departments across the country.

This is a link to NACCHO's Big City Health Department Population Indicator and Performance Measures Library. LHDs can use this library as one resource to find and identify common performance measures by public health topic areas that may be adapted to an LHD's own performance management system. Please note that these measures have not been reviewed for quality and are only intended to help LHDs brainstorm performance measures based on what peers are using.
