Improving WIC Farmers' Market Coupon Redemption Rate

Summary

Impact Statement:
WIC coupons for use at famer’s markets are a precious resource for improving nutrition and reducing food hunger in low-income families, as well as supporting local farmers. Deschutes County Health Department noted a decreasing trend of redemption, which meant a literal wasting of coupons that other families might have been able to use. The Department employed a series of QI interventions to increase the redemption of WIC farmer’s markets coupons from 63% to 76 % over a seven month period.
Summary:

Redemption rates for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons provided by the state of Oregon had been on a downward trend since 2009. The previous redemption rate for 2012 was 63.22%. Improvements implemented include reminding clients to use the coupons and informing clients of the value of what they can purchase. The redemption rate at the end of the improvement project was 75.56%, which was a significant increase from the baseline.
